The target is important: to obtain the Controlled Origin Denomination (D.O.C.) seal for an entire area, the Maremma, in Tuscany. Too ambitious? Apparently not, since the idea has turned into a legislative proposal and is already on the tables of the Ministries. The spotlight is already on, in short, and focused on the territorial excellence of that part of the Tuscan Region that has its capital at Grosseto, but whose borders are rather vague, since it ranges from the sea to the mountains, through a wide variety of grape species.

The Chamber of Commerce of Grosseto (with the support of the Banca della Maremma and Grosseto Fiere) is working hard on marketing the area, and has scheduled a number of events, starting with the Maremma Wine Shire, the trade fair of wines from the Tuscan Maremma. In its second edition this year, it will be held from May 21 to 23 at the Braccagno fairgrounds (10 kilometers from Grosseto) and will feature over 170 companies based in the provincial territory, offering over a thousand wines. «This year we have invited more than 120 importers from all over the world, from Europe to the United States, from Brazil to Asia» comment Giovanni Lamioni, president of the Chamber of Commerce of Grosseto, himself a product of the Maremma. After that, with the same format, from September 22 to 24, will come the Maremma Food Shire, another fair, this time for food, to exhibit all the other products of the area in the agrifood sector. Then comes New York, between October and November, where the organizers are looking for an exclusive location for an exhibition of all the enological (and other) excellences of the area. (f.v.)
