It is well-known that the Mediterranean diet is one of the best in the world. UNESCO has well understood this fact proclaiming the Mediterranean diet, together with the Japanese one, the healthiest in the world. Among their advantages, it is worth mentioning their ability to reduce cardio-vascular diseases, diabetes and cancer, increasing life expectancy. Here is an interesting infographic to recap all their benefits, distributed by the Italian medical group Medigo.

Several studies conducted in Italy confirm the great benefits of the Mediterranean diet. For instance, in Acciaroli (Naples), 10% of inhabitants is over 100 years old, while the average life expectancy is 79 years old, 7 years more compared to the world one.

With regard to the diseases, researchers have highlighted that the Mediterranean diet is able to reduce 25% of ictus chances, along with 35% of cancer ones and 46% of those referring to Parkinson disease. How? The answer is very simple and it is mostly focused on two main ingredients of the Mediterranean diet: fruit and vegetables. In fact, they contain antioxidants, fibres and vitamins and they contribute to strengthening the immune system, to keep the heart healthy and to facilitate weight loss.

Also, carbs play a fundamental role and help our body to stay fit. In fact, they control blood pressure and facilitate digestion. Furthermore, carbs also help the weight loss process, when assumed in well-balanced portions.

Legumes, seeds and walnuts are also very important because they contain Omega3, Iron, fibres and vitamins. They help fighting cholesterol and to regulating glucose levels in the blood.

Fish and seafood are two other essential elements of the Mediterranean diet, which includes about 5 portions a week. Fish like salmon and tuna are rich in Omega 3, helping brain functions. Moreover, fish and seafood contain proteins, calcium, iron and vitamins, limiting cholesterol and helping weight loss.

Finally, eggs, milk and meat are essential too in balanced portions to live a longer life and stay fit.
