According to data recently released by the Italian National Agency of Tourism (ENIT), foreign tourism had a huge positive impact of Italy's economy in 2013, with a significant increase of travel to Italy during Christmas and New Year's Eve holidays.

The demand for "Italian holidays" was mostly led by countries outside Europe, but a remarkable increase affected European countries as well. According to ENIT, more than 48 million foreigners visited the country in 2012, 2.5 per cent more in 2013, and a further +3 per cent has been estimated for 2014.

Right now, Italy is the fifth most visited destination in the world tourism ranking published by the United Nation World Tourism Organisation, after France, the US, China, and Spain. Andrea Babbi, director-general of ENIT, believed that diversification is the Italian recipe for success: "We have doubled our efforts, trying to promote Italy in every corner of the world in 2013. Now good results are coming."
