A few days ago the Permanent Representation of Italy at the EU organized in Bruxelles the first official EU presentation of the 2015 Expo.

The Milan edition of Universal Expo will run from May 1st to October the 31st,  and it is going to bring together over 140 Participant countries, International Organizations and Companies around the theme "Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life".

According to Expo organizers, the reason why this topic has been chosen is related to "the international community's key strategic objectives [...] to provide sufficient, safe and healthy food to everyone, while at the same time guaranteeing the environmental, social and economic sustainability of the agricultural and food sectors".

During this official presentation, the Vice President of the European Parliament Gianni Pittella described Expo 2015 as an event addressing "one of the most important themes of our times and calls us to a great degree of responsibility towards future generations. 'Feeding the planet, energy for life' means to take responsibility of the newest aspects of globalization: international competitiveness, access to raw materials, lifestyle changes. World population growth will act as a multiplier of those effects that are already generating new inequalities today. If there is an evident challenge for the European Union in the XXI century, this is it. A sustainable agriculture and environment, the enhancement and diffusion of innovation and research, a cooperative development based on more equal exchanges, the creation of a global governance: only if we will be able to address these policies with a long-term view, then we will be able to say we have matched up with this challenge."

The President of the European Council, Herman Van Rompuy, stressed that Italy should be proud of organizing the Expo at a time in which it will also have the Presidency of the EU.  Actually, he concluded, "who can guide us to a more beautiful and serene future better than Italy, a wonderful country that enshrines together over half of humanity's cultural heritage?".
