Romano Benet and his wife Nives Meroi, both 55, reached the 8,091-metre (26,545-foot) Annapurna summit on Thursday morning. They have become the first couple to conquer the world's 14 highest summits (all over 8,000 metres).

Before the Italian couple, only 34 mountain climbers had been able to ascend the 14 summits, the first one being another Italian mountaineer: the legendary Reinhold Messner who completed his climbs in 1986. After the result, Ms Meroi declared: "It was an extraordinary climb that represents the culmination of our mountaineering career: a mix of style, technique, courage, strength, harmony". The sense of harmony is the secret of the couple's success, because married life is the same at home and on the highest mountains, as Ms Meroi also pointed out.
